Dorothy Alves Holmes is a mother of two adult daughters, Roletha and Shelly, the grandmother of seven and the great-grandmother of three. She lives in Millers Tavern, Virginia, having moved there from Baltimore, Maryland several years ago. Prior to her move, Dorothy was a part of the Cultural Enrichment Program of the Baltimore City Schools, performing as a poet and storyteller. Dorothy held this position for six years.

Prior to her work in the schools, Dorothy was employed for twenty years as an award-winning District Sales Manager for Avon Products, Inc.  Dorothy is in the Who's Who of Avon District Managers being a member of the Circle of Excellence which consists of the top ten percent in-sales increases.

Dorothy is currently the coordinator of a preschool reading program called 123READ. This unique program encourages reading readiness and language development.

Undertaking this project as a self-published author. Dorothy published her 4th book of published poetry, Let The Music Play,  Her other books are People Talk, If Butterflies Are Free and Somebody Said, a coloring book of verse illustrated by David Crain.  Somebody Said is a book dedicated to anyone who has had their feelings hurt because "someody said" something unkind to them or about them. Dorothy has won several awards for her poetry, and in 1987 won the prestigious Mid-Atlantic Poetry Award.  It has been said that Dorothy's poetry is important because it deals with real people and describes real situations with great warmth and sympathy.
